Custom Kitchen Cabinetry Ideas

Not entirely sure what you want your new custom kitchen cabinetry to look like? Custom kitchen ideas to consider include classically painted finishes, ultra-modern two-tone kitchen cabinetry, sophisticated solid wood species with satin furniture like sheen, a truly rustic look, or a combination of all of these ideas.

If you want to give your kitchen a bit more personality, patterned cabinets are currently very fashionable. They look great in kitchens that are otherwise quite understated in design. Keen to make a statement? Black cabinetry is always a bold choice! You can add a trendy touch by including brass handles and faucetry finishes.

Transitional Kitchen Designs

Transitional style is the easiest way to avoid dating your kitchen. Due to its flexibility and diversity, a transitionally styled kitchen can go in many different directions – all of them convincingly, while transcending the hands of time. Using straighter lines in the cabinetry and adding the right embellishments accomplishes this. Furthermore, you can delve a little deeper into any one style through:

  • Color choices
  • Hardware options
  • Flooring materials
  • Architectural accents

The transitional kitchen has the “chameleon factor” going for it. Whether you are into slick and modern or embellished traditional, the appeal of the transitional style is that its neutrality works with every taste, every time. Regardless if you love French provincial or are into the arts and crafts movement, transitional design bridges the gap and clearly shows how you can satisfy your personal taste without sacrificing the details of your design. The Schrapper’s team excels at all of these motifs!

Contemporary Kitchen Designs

In the second half of the 20th century, contemporary design emerged, rounding out modern design’s sharper edges and putting a softer light on furnishings and accessories. In a partial throwback to Biedermeier’s use of pale woods, contemporary design began highlighting lighter colored woods such as maple and birch, and implementing semi-gloss and polished finishes. You don't need to know the history of contemporary art to enjoy the historically researched and cleverly designed creations that Schrapper’s Fine Cabinetry, Inc. brings to the table. Rest assured that the craftsmen at Schrapper’s are as meticulous with historical details as they are regarding the function and beauty of the finished kitchen.

Choosing a Kitchen Layout

Aside from choosing between a traditional, contemporary or transitional kitchen design, you also need to decide on the perfect layout. This will depend, to a large extent, on the size and shape of the space you have available, as well as your budget. There are four basic kitchen layout templates, and each has its own set of attributes and benefits. Most kitchens use one of these templates, sometimes with modifications.

Galley kitchens

The galley kitchen is the simplest and most cost-effective layout, perfect for small spaces and popular among first-time buyers. This layout can be built using standard styles and sizes. Galley kitchens are focused on making the optimum functional use of the space available, with an emphasis on efficiency and practicality. Preparation, cooking and sink areas are usually laid out along one wall, with the facing wall being dedicated to storage in the form of cabinetry and shelving.

L-shaped kitchens

Whereas galley kitchens work with two facing walls, L-shaped kitchens are arranged on walls at right angles to one another. This is the most common layout, usually finished off with a fridge-freezer combo at one end, and with cooking and cleaning up areas on separate walls. There are a variety of built-in cabinetry designs if you are thinking about storage options for the L-shaped layout. It provides enough room for a breakfast bar or dining table, or even a center island.

U-shaped kitchens

Where there is more room available, a U-shaped kitchen is a perfect option. This layout offers easy access to separate washing, cooking and preparation areas, with plenty of floor space to move in between.

Island kitchens

Island kitchens are perhaps the most popular kitchen layouts, especially for large families with children, and for homes that have sufficient space. They provide a large, practical space with room for preparation, cooking and cleaning, as well as a communal eating area. The center island creates a great space around which to work and socialize. Island kitchens do require more space than the other options, and will usually involve a larger budget too.

Frequently Asked questions on Custom Kitchen Cabinetry Design and Remodeling

How long does a kitchen remodel take?

There is no doubt that you will want to reap the benefits of your brand new, beautiful kitchen as quickly as possible. However, like most masterpieces, a kitchen remodel takes time. The total number of hours and days it will take will depend on the size of the kitchen, the scope of the project, and the availability of the materials required. In general, you can expect the average kitchen remodel to take between 6 and 12 weeks.

If you are simply replacing certain elements in your old kitchen, such as your kitchen cabinetry or your countertops, you can plan for around 6 to 8 weeks. However, if the remodel is going to involve activities like knocking walls down and various other structural changes, you can expect it to take longer, usually between 10 and 12 weeks.

How much does a kitchen remodel increase a home’s value?

That will depend on how dated your old kitchen was. If the last time it saw a revamp was in the 1990s, then you can definitely expect the kitchen remodel to increase your home value quite substantially indeed. The experts claim that you can expect to get back around 60 to 80% of your kitchen remodel costs when you sell your home.

How to plan a kitchen remodel / How to design a kitchen remodel/layout:

So, you have decided to go ahead with your kitchen’s remodel. Now you will need to design it. These are some of the factors to consider:

    1. The first thing to consider is your kitchen cabinetry. Do you want cabinetry that is fresh and modern? Or do you prefer the old-school, rustic look?
    2. Next, you will need to decide whether or not you want a kitchen island. Keep in mind that you will need to have a certain amount of space available in order to accommodate this feature.
    3. Would you like your kitchen to be made bigger? Or, are you happy with its current size? This will determine how long your kitchen remodel will take to complete.
    4. Finally, you will need to think about the types of appliances with which you would like to furnish your new kitchen.
